Rock-Track 4X4

The Rock-Trac heavy-duty part-time 4×4 system features Brake Lock Differential for superior capability in a wide range of conditions and obstacles like steep hills and large rocks. For more extreme situations, the Tru-Lok electronically locking differential answers the call.

Standard on Wrangler Rubicon and Unlimited Rubicon


During High Range that is all road surfaces, including wet or snow-covered pavement, sand or gravel

In Low range like conditions requiring added low-speed power, technical driving, and situations when added torque is helpful (e.g., pulling a boat trailer out of water).

Command-Trac 4X4

Thanks to a proven shift-on-the-fly system, rock climbing 2.72:1 low range and NV241 GII transfer case, the Command-Trac 4×4 system provides serious confidence whether off-roading or in slippery conditions.

Torque is split up to 50/50 front and rear and neutral is provided for flat towing. For added convenience and adaptability, the system can be shifted from 2WD to 4WD HI at speeds of up to 88 km/h (57 mph).

Standard on Wrangler Sport, Sport S, Willys Wheeler, Unlimited Willys Wheeler, Sahara, Unlimited Sport S and Unlimited Sahara.


During high range that is on all road surfaces, including wet or snow-covered pavement, sand or gravel

For Low ranges having conditions requiring added low-speed power, technical driving, and situations when added torque is helpful (e.g., pulling a boat trailer out of water).

Quadra-Trac I 4X4

For those looking for full-time, all-weather capability that adjusts itself automatically to the conditions, the Quadra-Trac I 4×4 system is for you. It senses a change in driving conditions and adapts with no driver input needed.

Power can be split up to 48% front and 52% rear to maximize traction. It also combines with the standard Brake Lock Differential and 4-Wheel-Brake Traction Control System for confidence to tackle a wide range of surfaces and weather conditions.

Dodge Viper ACR with 13 Track Records

Dodge Viper ACR is the street legal sports car with a weight of 1538.6 kilograms, 481Kw(645HP) power, Independently adjustable suspension and 771kg down-force at 285 km/hr. 

The interesting thing is all these 13 track records were done without a professional record. Dodge not only broke the previous records bu also broke records of all production cars in all 13 tracks

Its first Track was Inde Motorsports Ranch; Wilcox, Ariz. / Configuration 4 which has 2.20-mile track and it was cleared in 1:33.75 time. And the rest is history!!!

Dodge is the only production which has the 13 track records in the world.

Mitsubishi adds more Innovation to the list

AS&G – Auto Stop and Go

AS&G idling stop automatically stops and starts the engine when the vehicle stops and starts.

As you can see in the above image, AS&G idling stop automatically stops and starts the engine when the vehicle stops and starts.

Idling Stop is a technology that automatically stops the engine when the vehicle stops. and automatically starts the engine when the vehicle starts moving again, for example when stopped and waiting at a traffic light. By turning off the engine when the car is in use but not moving, fuel economy is improved and CO2 is also reduced as exhaust gasses are eliminated when the engine is off. It works automatically and there is no difference between driving a car with AS&G and a car without it.

ACL – Active Cornering Lights

ACL provides support for night driving by additionally illuminating the direction in which the vehicle is moving in accordance with the steering angle.

35W halogen bulbs are used in the cornering lights. The system links with the turn signal light at speeds of 40km/h or less and also links with the angle of the steering wheel to additionally illuminating the direction in which the vehicle is moving. ACL makes driving at dark intersections, curves, etc. safer.

ACD  – Active Center Differential

The corporate philosophy of Mitsubishi Motors includes “Driving Pleasure” and “Toughness & Safety.” Our Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control System which controls both the driving force and braking force of the four wheels has made new-generation driving possible.

The ACD is a system that electronically controls the differential limit between the front and rear wheels to distribute an appropriate driving force to the four wheels. The system sets the base driving force distribution to 50:50 and controls the differential limit between the front and rear wheels from “Free” to “Locked 4WD.” It makes precise control a reality by using information about the wheel speed, the steering wheel angle, the engine torque, the brake pressure, and the yaw rate sensor, and combines a high level of traction performance and steering response adapted to the driving conditions.

Previous we discussed on the SKYACTIV Gasoline engine and Diesel engine, that how an engine works and what were its merits and de-merits. Let’s explore the transmission of SKYACTIV Technology. Today we learn perfect control of transmission with the help of Ideal Transmission.

Ideal Transmission for Perfect Control

Transmission is critical not only to fuel efficiency improvement but also to a cars driving performance. The “ideal transmission” that gives you perfect control over your car. With this concept, we have developed a pair of transmission systems that promise precise handling as well as improved fuel efficiency.

Thanks to an expanded lockup range of more than 80%, the SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission gives you the direct feel of a manual transmission. The SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission, with its class-leading light weight, ensures a crisp feel when shifting.

We have two different types of Transmission as mentioned below.



A new-generation highly-efficient automatic transmission that achieves excellent torque transfer efficiency through a wider lock-up range and features the best attributes of all transmission types.


  • Combines all the advantages of conventional automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions, and dual clutch transmissions
  • A dramatically widened lock-up range improves torque transfer efficiency and realizes a direct driving feel that is equivalent to a manual transmission
  • A 4-to-7 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the current transmission


All the Advantages of Conventional Step CVT (continuously variable transmission), Dual Clutch, and Step AT (Automatic transmissions).

Automatic transmissions (AT) can be categorized into three types:

  • CVT: generates various gear reduction ratios with a pair of pulleys
  • Dual Clutch: utilizes 2 separate clutches for odd and even gear sets.
  • Conventional AT: generates various gear reduction ratios with planetary gear sets


The key requirements for ATs are “good fuel economy”, “quick start-up” (including hill climbing), “direct feel” and “smooth shifting”.

Technical Aims & Concept

North American and Japanese markets always prefer Automatic transmission Whereas Manual Transmission is dominating in Europe. To meet global demand, two types of MT (“Large” and “Mid” sizes) have been newly developed. The development concept was to create a “light and compact MT with improved shift feel and better fuel economy”. The goal was to achieve an MX-5-like sporty and brisk shift feel.

For a quick shift feel, both a short shift-lever stroke and light shift effort had to be achieved. By pursuing the ideal structure of manual transmissions, 16% at maximum of weight reduction was achieved. Furthermore, internal friction losses were significantly reduced to achieve a 1% improvement in fuel economy.

Quick and Crisp Shift Feel

To achieve lighter shift effort with a short shift lever stroke, the lever ratio must be increased. However, a larger lever ratio reduces the internal stroke. To achieve precise synchronizer and torque transmission even with a short internal stroke, a small module spline is used. skyactiv-mt_02_en

Also, the shift effort gradually reduces through the stroke, providing reassuring resistance as the lever is first pushed, then getting lighter so it feels as if the shift lever is automatically moving into gear. With the current shift lever, shift effort in the select direction (right-left direction) increases with the movement of the shift lever, but with the new shift lever, a stable shift effort is achieved. Binding is minimized when shifting diagonally.

Light and Compact MT

Since the structure of an MT is relatively simple, completely new ideas and logical thinking are required to achieve further weight reduction and higher efficiency. skyactiv-mt_03_en

The triple-shafted gear train with a common gear for 2nd and 3rd was selected from approximately 30 different configurations due to its potential to achieve lightness, light shift effort, high efficiency, and a wide gear ratio. Based on this selection, the lightest structural specifications were selected from over 10,000 alternatives. By reviewing the function of each component, commonization of the 1st and reverse gears was newly adopted.

This enabled the length of the secondary shaft to be reduced by 20%. A common 1st and reverse gear made possible the removal of the reverse idle shaft. As a result, by reexamining gear configurations, the number of components decreased and the gear train weight was reduced by roughly 3kg.

Mitsubishi to launch new MIVEC engine

Mitsubishi to launch new MIVEC engine (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control System – MIVEC), which is the general name for all engines equipped with the variable valve timing mechanism developed by Mitsubishi Motors.

Mitsubishi Motors has been focusing for a long time on technologies to control valve timing and amount of lift with the aim of achieving high power output, low fuel consumption, and low exhaust emissions. The MIVEC engine was first used in 1992 in the Mirage, and since then Mitsubishi Motors has been adding a number of enhancements to produce an even better performance. In the Outlander launched in 2005, the Delica D:5 and the Galant Fortis launched in 2007, Mitsubishi Motors adopted a mechanism that continuously and optimally controls the intake and exhaust valve timing.
Now, the all-new MIVEC engine controls both intake valve timing and amount of valve lift at the same time, all the time.

The all-new MIVEC engine with a simple SOHC structure is used for the Japanese-market GALANT FORTIS and GALANT FORTIS SPORTBACK from 2011, OUTLANDER from 2012.


It reduces pumping losses by adjusting the intake air volume by variating intake smart-mivec_im_01valve lift stroke as well as throttle valves, improving fuel efficiency. This improves fuel consumption including improvement of combustion stability through optimization of the combustion chamber structure and reduction of friction through optimization of the piston structure.

With simple SOHC structure, engine performance is equal to the previous MIVEC engine In addition the AS&G (Automatic Stop And Go) idling-stop system achieves a smooth stop-and-start with minimal vibration along with reduced fuel consumption at restart due to the reduction of air intake volume by the all-new MIVEC system

Features of the All-new MIVEC System – 1

Minimizing pumping loss contributes to very high fuel efficiency!

With a conventional gasoline engine, the intake air volume is controlled by a throttle valve, increasing the air intake resistance when a piston descends. MIVEC engine restrains this air intake resistance by controlling the intake valve lift as well as the valve opening/closing timing simultaneously and continuously. Thus it improves fuel consumption by reducing pumping loss during intake.


Features of the All-new MIVEC system – 2

The all-new MIVEC engine’s SOHC achieves continuous variable valve timing and lift!

The all-new continuously-variable valve system make valve lift stroke, the length of valve-opening time and valve opening timing continuously and simultaneously variable through a control shaft (see figure below).


With this mechanical interlock structure, cooperative control of hydraulic variable valve timing phase system becomes unnecessary. Accordingly the new MIVEC system can be adopted to the simple SOHC structure.
Consequently the new MIVEC realizes light weight and compact new engine. The all-new variable-valve structure simply adds an oscillating cam, a support shaft, and a center rocker arm to the conventional SOHC’s rotating cam, rocker arm and rocker shaft. The range of motion of the oscillating cam is made continuously variable by moving the fulcrum position of the center rocker arm through rotation of the control shaft (intake rocker shaft) by an electric motor.

Continuous variable transmissions (CVT).          


A CVT is a lesser-known alternative to conventional automatic transmissions. You operate it just like a regular one — slide the shift lever from “P” to “D” and off you go. Continuously variable transmission technology doesn’t have gears at all; rather, it’s like having one magical gear that’s variable across all driving situations. One clutch controls the odd gears (first, third, fifth and reverse), while the other controls the even gears (second, fourth and sixth) which allows in continuous flow of engine power and with no shift shock.
