Environmental Technology of Mazda!!!

Mazda is always working hard to develop environmental technologies which will contribute to an exciting and sustainable future for people, automobiles, and the Earth.

Idling Stop Technology

Idling stop systems save fuel by automatically shutting down the engine when the vehicle is static and restarting it when the vehicle returns to motion. This Technology of Mazda improves fuel economy by approximately eight percent. Mazda’s i-stop restarts the engine through combustion.

This technology enables the system to restart the engine with exactly the same timing every time, to enhance fuel economy, and to deliver smooth and comfortable acceleration for the driver at restart. The restart takes place in a mere 0.35 seconds, which is about half of the time taken by conventional starter-motor idling stop systems.

Brake Energy Regeneration System

Brake energy regeneration systems convert a vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity as the car decelerates. The electricity is then stored for later use. It can be used to power the headlights, climate control, audio system, or any other electrical equipment. This reduces the need for the engine to burn extra fuel in order to generate electricity, and thereby improves fuel economy.

Electric Vehicle

Mazda undertook development of electric vehicles with the aim of offering all our customers fun-to-drive performance and outstanding environmental and safety performance. The result is the Demio EV which offers both the sporty driving people expect from Mazda and a remarkable driving range of 200 km.

Electric vehicles have batteries and electric motors instead of engines and fuel tanks, and are powered entirely by electricity. The Demio EV features a unique coil-switching motor which delivers both high torque and high RPMs. Another special feature of electric vehicles is the quietude of the cabin due to the complete lack of engine noise.

Hydrogen Vehicle

Mazda’s hydrogen rotary engine use hydrogen as its fuel, emits no CO2 and offers superb environmental performance. A dual-fuel system allows the vehicle to run on either gasoline or hydrogen. The RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine employs direct injection, with an electronically-controlled hydrogen gas injector.

The Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid combines Mazda’s hydrogen rotary engine with a hybrid system for significantly improved performance and practicality. The engine’s reduced intake/exhaust resistance and improved combustion efficiency yields high power output across a wide range of engine speeds.

Bio-based Engineering Plastic

Bio-based Engineering Plastic that can reduce its impact on the environment featuring high-quality finish made from plant derived materials. Mazda has succeeded in developing the automotive industry’s first high-strength heat-resistant plant-derived bioplastic for auto interior parts, and the world’s first biofabric for vehicle seat upholstery made entirely from plant-derived fiber.

This bio-based engineering plastic is used for the first time for interior parts for the all-new Mazda MX-5 was launched globally in 2015. Moving forward, it will be used for exterior parts in other production models due to the outstanding durability.

Each chiseled feature serves a purpose, as both sedan and five-door models achieve a best-in-class coefficient of drag (Cd) at 0.255 and 0.28, respectively, when equipped with active grille shutters and i-ELOOP, a capacitor-based regenerative engine braking system to power all of a vehicle’s electrical components.

All Mazda3 vehicles equipped with a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission feature a manual shift option but the Sport mode feature adjusts the shift mapping – and to a lesser extent the throttle response – to better match more spirited driving conditions, such as challenging twisty roads.
performance mazda3
The 2017 Mazda 3’s two engine choices remain a 155-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder on 3 i models and a 184-hp 2.5-liter inline-four on 3 s models. The most significant addition is Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, a new steering system that reduces torque when entering a corner to increase the responsiveness of the steering rack.

A suite of active-safety features remains on the options list: Forward-Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Keeping Assist, High Beam Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support and Advanced Blind-Spot Monitoring. A new camera is now part of the package, which Mazda says expands the speed range at which pedestrians can be detected for the automated emergency-braking system.Cars equipped with the i-Activsense package can now also recognize road signs.

Mazda – Skyactiv Technology on Gasoline Engine

Breakthrough Innovations Lift Cars’ Performance to New Heights

Conventional internal combustion engines are only able to harness around 30% of fuels potential energy. By pushing the limits of internal combustion, Mazda has developed the SKYACTIV family of engines which can deliver much greater fuel efficiency than conventional engines. Simply put, SKYACTIV engines can compress the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders to an extraordinary degree, squeezing far more energy from every drop of fuel.
With their compression ratio of 14:1, unparalleled among mass production engines, SKYACTIV engines bring you both sheer driving pleasure and outstanding fuel economy.

Let’s Move on with the Skyactiv Technology.

SKYACTIV-G Gasoline Engine –  SKYACTIV-G

A new-generation highly-efficient direct-injection gasoline engine that achieves the world’s highest gasoline engine compression ratio of 14.0:1

  • The world’s first gasoline engine for mass production vehicles to achieve a high compression ratio of 14.0:1
  • Significantly improved engine efficiency thanks to the high compression combustion, resulting in 15 percent increases in fuel efficiency and torque
  • Improved everyday driving thanks to increased torque at low- to mid-engine speeds
  • A 4-2-1 exhaust system, cavity pistons, multihole injectors and other innovations enable the high compression ratio

*The 15% improvement in fuel efficiency and torque was calculated by comparing SKYACTIV-G to Mazda’s current gasoline engine.
Compression ratio, fuel economy and torque vary according to market, carline and transmission.

Merits and Issues of a High Compression Ratio

  • Increasing the compression ratio considerably improves thermal efficiency. The compression ratio of recent gas engines is generally around 10:1 to 12:1.
  • Theoretically, if the compression ratio is raised from 10:1 to 15:1, the thermal efficiency will improve by roughly 9%. However, one of the reasons preventing the spread of high compression ratio gas engines is the large torque drop due to knocking (Fig.1)

fig.1:Torque decrease due to increased compression ratio
  • Knocking is abnormal combustion in which the air-fuel mixture ignites prematurely due to exposure to high temperature and pressure, creating an unwanted high-frequency noise. When the compression ratio is increased, the temperature at compression top dead center (TDC) also rises, increasing the probability of knocking.
  • In order to lower the temperature at compression TDC, reducing the amount of hot exhaust gas remaining inside the combustion chamber is effective. For example, with a compression ratio of 10:1, a residual gas temperature of 750 deg. C, and an intake air temperature of 25 deg. C, if 10% of the exhaust gas remains, the temperature inside the cylinder before compression increases by roughly 70 deg. C, and the temperature at compression TDC is calculated to increase by roughly 160 deg. C. Therefore, it can be easily inferred that the amount of residual gas has an major impact on knocking.

    fig.2:Effect of residual gas reduction
  • These calculations are summarized in Fig.2, and as indicated, if the amount of residual gas is halved from 8% to 4%, the temperature at compression TDC is calculated to remain the same even when the compression ratio is increased from 11:1 to 14:1.
  • This reduction of residual gas was focused on for SKYACTIV-G, enabling the realization of a high compression ratio gasoline engine.

Knock-Resistant Technologies

4-2-1 Exhaust System

fig.3:Residual gas reduction by 4-2-1 exhaust system
  • One option to significantly reduce residual gas is the adoption of a 4-2-1 exhaust system.
  • As shown in Fig.3, when the exhaust manifold is short, the high pressure wave from the gas emerging immediately after cylinder No. 3’s exhaust valves open,
  • For example, arrives at cylinder No.1 as it finishes its exhaust stroke and enters its intake stroke. As a result, exhaust gas which has just moved out of the cylinder is forced back inside the combustion chamber, increasing the amount of hot residual gas.
  • With a short exhaust manifold, the high pressure wave arrives at the next cylinder within a short amount of time, causing this adverse effect to continue from low to high engine speeds.
  • However, with a long 4-2-1 exhaust system, since it takes time for the high pressure wave to reach the next cylinder, the effect mentioned is limited to extra-low engine speeds, making the reduction of residual gas at almost all engine speeds possible.
  • In addition, a pipe length of over 600mm was necessary to elevate actual-use torque, but space was saved by adopting a loop shape.
  • The major issue with the 4-2-1 exhaust system is that the long distance cools the exhaust gas before it reaches the catalyst, delaying the catalyst’s activation. Exhaust gas temperature can be increased by delaying the ignition timing, but too much retardation causes unstable combustion. For SKYACTIV-G, stable combustion was realized even when the ignition timing after engine-start is considerably delayed.

    fig.4:Piston cavity
  • This was made possible by adopting a piston cavity (Fig.4) and optimizing fuel injection in order to formulate a stratified air-fuel mixture around the spark plug. Furthermore, the piston cavity resolved the issue of the initial flame coming in contact with the piston head and generating a cooling loss.

Combustion Improvement

To improve resistance to knocking, shortening of combustion duration was also attempted. The faster the combustion, the shorter amount of time the unburned air-fuel mixture is exposed to high temperatures, allowing for normal combustion to conclude before knocking occurs. Specifically, aside from creating a more homogeneous mixture by means of intensifying air flow, increasing injection pressure, and using multi-hole injectors to enhance fuel spray characteristics, a piston cavity is used to prevent the initial combustion flame from hitting the piston and interfering with the flame’s growth.

Historical – Innovative Companies

When People think of the Possible out of the Im(possible), that’s where we find history in the making. Below are the Companies who are in the limelight for their innovation.

Wow! Mazda stole the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show with a stunning innovative rotary-powered sports car, captured as the “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” award at the 31st Festival Automobile International.

The HYUNDAI N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo was created to inspire the passion of ‘N’, the high performance line-up in celebration of Hyundai’s 50th anniversary which comes in 2017. The innovation is with the body style and the speed is mind-blowing! We can use three key words to describe it Style, Light and Quick or say as fighter jet on wheels

Chrysler, Mopar 200S

Chrysler vehicles are designed to be with you for the long haul. This time around, Mopar brought two cars — a customized 200S and 300S, emphasizing the sporty side of the luxury brand. 2017 Mazda6 Atenza First Drive!!!!

The debut of Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control technology on its flagship sedan and wagon range, in conjunction with a bunch of noise-reducing, luxury-enhancing measures to give the Mazda 6 a chance up against other sedans.

The interior still delivers that genuine feeling of premium quality that Mazda has been nailing for a while now, despite the far-from-premium price tag. New Nappa leather for the Atenza grades we drive at launch help even more here, but the quality of the infotainment system, switchgear design and layout, seating comfort and general ambiance remain a carryover from the previous model.

The new steering wheel looks premium and features re-positioned buttons with better tactile feel. The Multi-Information Display in the meter cluster is now full color – like the Active Driving Display (Head Up Display) – and has a more diverse range of functions.

Mazda6 is virtually unchanged on the outside, with just slight tweaks to the wing mirrors to set it apart. There’s no doubt it’s a stylish design, perhaps even more so in wagon form. On the road, the wagon cuts a dashing figure that leaves me wondering why more families don’t opt for a wagon as opposed to an SUV.

A ‘High Precision DE Boost Control’ system improves the precision and response of the engine’s torque delivery in light-throttle situations. The unchanged 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol four also gets a bit vocal higher up in the rev range.

But the biggest addition to the 6 is Mazda’s GVC technology. Mazda claims that GVC reduces fatigue and increases stability by altering the amount of torque delivered to each front wheel while driving, resulting in smoother steering inputs and less roll movement.

The 2017 Mazda6 lifts its safety credentials further with an even more comprehensive safety suit which now adds pedestrian recognition to SCBSThe safety system also adds traffic sign recognition on some models and blind spot monitoring across the range.

The boost in safety features makes the Mazda 6 one of the safest vehicles in its class, especially in the full fat Atenza variant tested here.  Every Mazda6 gets six airbags and all but the entry-level Sport get front and rear parking sensors.

Mazda’s – i-stop Technology

Mazda is always known for introducing innovative and effective technology to the customers and this time it’s no different, Mazda has again come up with a technology that soothes your engine and gives you a better driving experience.

What is Idling Stop Technology?

The Idling stop (i-stop) is a smart technology that saves fuel by switching off the engine when the car stops.

i-stop with Gasoline Engines

Conventional idling stop systems rely on a starter motor to restart the engine, Mazda’s i-stop restarts the engine through combustion; fuel is directly injected into a cylinder while the engine is stopped and ignited to generate downward piston force. The result is a quick and quiet engine re-start compared to other systems and a significant saving in fuel.

i-stop with Clean Diesel Engines

Conventional diesel engine idling stop systems require two engine cycles to restart, Mazda’s unique i-stop needs just one cycle, thanks to its precise control of the piston positions. As a result, i-stop achieves the world’s fastest diesel engine restart time of approximately 0.40 seconds (internal measurement on vehicles with automatic transmission) and its operation is barely noticeable.
